For high handicap and beginner golfers, investing in a quality driver doesn’t have to break the bank. Used drivers offer an excellent opportunity to acquire top-tier equipment at a fraction of the cost. When I needed to upgrade from my TaylorMade 300ti driver in 2021, I knew that new was not for me. Spending $400 to $600 for one club was not an option! I ended up buying a Ping G400 from ebay, not knowing there was other places to look! So where do you go to get a quality used driver? Right here! This post highlights some of the best affordable pre-owned drivers and trusted platforms where you can purchase them.

What to Look for in a Driver as a High Handicapper or Beginner

  • Forgiveness: A larger sweet spot helps minimize the impact of off-center hits. In other words, you don’t hit it perfectly, you’ll still get good results! Look for terms like High MOI (moment of inertia) and Perimeter Weighting.
  • High Launch: Drivers designed to promote a higher trajectory can aid in achieving greater distance. Hit’em high, watch them fly!
  • Adjustability: Features like adjustable loft and weight settings allow customization to suit your swing. Loft setting will help you launch the ball higher or lower, the weights may help you minimize a slice or hook!
  • Lightweight Design: Easier to swing, which can help increase clubhead speed.

Shaft Flex?: What Beginners and High Handicappers Need to Know

One of the most overlooked factors when purchasing a driver—especially for high-handicap and beginning golfers—is shaft flex. The flex of a golf shaft determines how much and easily it bends during a swing, . Golfers with slower swing speeds (typically under 95 mph) should opt for a Regular (R) or Senior (A) flex to help generate more clubhead speed and distance. If your swing speed is above 95 mph then you’re better off with a Stiff (S) flex shaft. If you choose a shaft that is too stiff, you may struggle with launch angle, accuracy, and feel. On the other hand, a shaft that is too flexible can cause control issues for stronger players.

When buying a pre-owned driver, make sure to check the listed shaft flex and consider your swing speed or consult a local fitter to match your game with the proper flex. Alternatively, go on a golf simulator and check out your club head speed. And while we’re discussing club specs, also check the loft of the driver – 10.5 degrees of loft should be fine!
